If You Smell Gas, Call the Utility First
A rotten egg smell in the house is a gas leak until proven otherwise. Do not touch a light switch, a phone or the thermostat. Leave the house, call your gas utility from outside, and let them shut off and check the line.
Once the utility has made it safe, call (631) 867-2231 and a technician repairs whatever the leak revealed. The order matters: the utility handles the gas, Domino handles the equipment.
Gas Boiler Repairs
You get heat back from the part that failed, not a sales pitch for a new boiler. On a gas boiler the usual faults are:
- A thermocouple or pilot assembly on an older boiler with a standing pilot, which shows up as a pilot that will not stay lit.
- A hot surface igniter or spark igniter on a newer boiler, which clicks or ticks without lighting.
- A flame sensor coated in oxide, so the boiler lights and shuts down within seconds.
- A gas valve that will not open, or a pressure switch or air switch that will not prove the vent.
- A dead circulator or stuck zone valve, which leaves one zone cold while the boiler runs hot.
- A waterlogged expansion tank or a dripping relief valve, covered on the boiler leaking water guide.
- Low water cutoffs, aquastats and the other controls listed on the parts repair and replacement page.
Domino repairs and installs gas boilers from Weil-McLain, Burnham, Peerless, Buderus, Bosch, Viessmann and other major makers, and the boiler repair page covers the water side of any boiler in more detail.
Gas Furnace Repairs
A gas furnace has an air side as well as a gas side, and both fail. The common repairs:
- Igniter, flame sensor and gas valve faults, the same as on a boiler, which leave the furnace clicking or blowing cold air.
- An inducer motor that will not start or a pressure switch that will not close, so the furnace never gets past its safety checks.
- A blower motor, capacitor or belt, so the burner runs and the heat never reaches the rooms.
- A high limit tripping on a clogged filter or a failing blower, which gives short cycles all day.
- A cracked heat exchanger, which is a replacement rather than a repair, and the technician will say so plainly.
Furnaces from Carrier, Rheem, Goodman, Lennox, Trane and other major makers are repaired, and the furnace repair cost page explains what decides the price.
Checks to Make Before You Call
- The thermostat is set to Heat and above the room temperature, with fresh batteries.
- The furnace or boiler switch, usually a light switch on or near the unit, is On.
- The breaker for the heating system has not tripped.
- The furnace filter is not clogged. A gray, furry filter is the most common reason a gas furnace short cycles.
- The gas supply valve on the pipe into the unit is open, with the handle in line with the pipe.
Leave the burner compartment and the gas valve alone beyond that. Gas controls are not homeowner repairs.
Gas Boiler and Furnace Repair Cost on Long Island
The service call is $189 plus parts, each priced before it goes in. Igniters, thermocouples, flame sensors, capacitors and blower motors are on the truck, so most gas repairs end with the heat running on the first visit. Calls outside regular hours carry an additional charge that is quoted on the phone before the technician is sent.
There is no contract and no membership, and the price is the same whether Domino installed the system or someone else did. When a repair would cost more than the unit is worth, you get the replacement price next to it, financing is available through Wisetack, and the old unit is removed as part of the job. Every price is on the pricing page.
Gas Furnace and Boiler Clean and Tune
Gas equipment needs a yearly cleaning as much as oil does, and skips it more often because it burns cleaner. A gas clean and tune checks the burners, the igniter and flame sensor, the heat exchanger, the venting and the controls, and it is quoted when you book. The tune-up page covers the oil side and the gas option.
Gas Heating Repair From Oil Burner Specialists
Many Long Island houses that converted from oil to gas kept calling the same company, and that is how Domino came to service as much gas equipment as oil. The technicians are NORA-certified, work on both fuels every day, and carry parts for both. If you are thinking about a conversion, the oil to gas conversion page explains the process.
