Weil-McLain Oil Boilers: WGO, WTGO and SGO
You get a boiler with parts in stock at every supply house on Long Island, which matters more than any brochure claim on a January night. Weil-McLain's residential oil boilers are cast iron, chimney vented, and sold in three lines:
- WGO Series 4: a water-only oil boiler for a house with a separate water heater. Models run from the WGO-2 at 0.7 gallons per hour to the WGO-9, with AFUE ratings of 86 to 87 percent, and the RD models carry the ENERGY STAR mark. A swing-away burner door gives full access to the chamber for cleaning.
- WTGO Series 4: the same boiler with a tankless coil, so the boiler makes the house's hot water. Common on Long Island houses that never had a separate water heater.
- SGO Series 4: the oil steam boiler, for the older houses on the North Shore and in Nassau County that still heat with steam radiators.
All three are certified by Weil-McLain to run on biodiesel blends up to B100 when paired with approved Beckett or Carlin burners, which means a new one will not be stranded as New York's heating oil blends change. Domino installs all three and services the earlier Series 2 and 3 boilers still running on Long Island.
Weil-McLain Gas Boilers
For gas houses and oil to gas conversions, Weil-McLain's gas line covers both ends of the price range. The CGa and CGi are cast iron chimney-vented boilers in the tradition of the oil models, and the EG is the cast iron gas steam boiler. The Evergreen, ECO Tec, Ultra and AquaBalance are condensing boilers that vent through a side wall and reach much higher efficiency, with the Simplicity combi making hot water as well. The technician matches the line to the house, the venting and the hot water load at the estimate.
Common Weil-McLain Boiler Problems and Their Causes
Most of what fails on a Weil-McLain boiler is the equipment bolted to it, not the cast iron. Here is what Domino technicians see most, with the usual cause:
- No heat with the burner locked out: a worn nozzle, sooted cad cell or weak igniter on the Beckett, Riello or Carlin burner, which is a burner parts repair, not a boiler problem.
- Relief valve dripping: a waterlogged expansion tank pushing the system past 30 psi.
- Lukewarm showers on a WTGO: the tankless coil has limed up, or the coil plate gasket is weeping.
- Water between the sections: a push nipple or section seal that has aged, more common on boilers that ran dry or took cold feed water while hot.
- One zone cold: a dead circulator or stuck zone valve, not the boiler.
- Steam boiler banging or flooding on an SGO: the low water cutoff or pressuretrol needs service, or the near-boiler piping has sludge in it.
The burner parts and controls for these repairs ride on every truck, so most are finished on the first visit.
Weil-McLain Boiler Warranty
Weil-McLain's residential warranty covers the cast iron sections of a water boiler for the lifetime of the original owner, with replacement sections prorated from the eleventh year onward, and the sections of a steam boiler for ten years. All other parts of the boiler carry a one-year warranty. Those are the manufacturer's terms, published on weil-mclain.com, and they apply to the sections only; the burner, controls and circulator are separate.
In practice, section failures are rare on a boiler that gets a yearly cleaning and never runs dry. The parts that do fail are the ones Domino carries.
Weil-McLain Boilers in Long Island Homes
A cast iron Weil-McLain fits the way Long Island houses are built: a chimney already in place, baseboard or radiators already piped, and often a damp basement that is hard on wall-hung equipment. The WGO and WTGO drop into the footprint of the boiler they replace, vent into the existing chimney, and take the same Beckett, Riello or Carlin burner the trucks already carry parts for. For a house that wants higher efficiency and side-wall venting, the Evergreen and ECO Tec gas models are the step up.
Weil-McLain Boiler Installation and Replacement
A new Weil-McLain starts with a free written estimate. The technician measures the house, checks the chimney and the piping, and recommends the model and size. The old boiler is removed as part of the job, the new one is piped, wired and fired, and the combustion is set with instruments before the technician leaves. Financing is available through Wisetack, subject to its terms, and the boiler replacement page covers what decides the price.
Weil-McLain Boiler Repair and Annual Service
Repairs are $189 plus parts, each priced before it is installed, 24 hours a day with no contract. The yearly $219 tune-up replaces the nozzle, filter and strainer, vacuums the sections and flue passages, and sets the burner, which is most of what keeps a Weil-McLain running for decades. Every price is on the pricing page.
