The Oil to Gas Conversion Process, Step by Step
You deal with two parties: the gas utility and Domino. The utility owns the street main and the service line to the house. Domino owns everything after the meter. Here is the order it happens in:
- You apply to the gas utility for service. The utility confirms gas is available on your street, runs the service line to the house and sets the meter. National Grid is the gas utility for most of Long Island.
- A Domino technician visits, looks at the boiler or furnace, the chimney, the piping and the oil tank, and gives you a written estimate for the equipment and the work.
- Once gas is live at the meter, the changeover is scheduled. The old oil unit comes out, the new gas boiler or furnace goes in, gas piping is run from the meter, and the venting is set up for the new unit.
- The oil tank is pumped out and removed, or abandoned in place if it is buried and removal is not practical.
- The system is fired, tested and shown to you before the technician leaves.
The utility's part can take weeks, so start there. The Domino part is scheduled around it so the old system keeps heating the house until the day of the swap.
Gas Boilers and Furnaces Domino Installs
You get a unit from a maker whose parts and service are easy to find on Long Island. Domino installs and services all main brands. For boilers that means Weil-McLain, Burnham, Peerless and Energy Kinetics System 2000, among others. For warm-air furnaces it means makers including Carrier, Rheem, Goodman, Lennox and Trane.
A house with baseboard or radiators gets a gas boiler, and a house with ducts gets a gas furnace. The furnace vs boiler guide explains why switching between the two rarely makes sense. If the house makes its hot water through a coil in the oil boiler, the estimate includes a replacement for that, which the water heater installation page covers.
Keeping the Boiler and Changing the Burner
A sound cast iron boiler does not always have to go. On some boilers the oil burner can be replaced with a gas power burner, which keeps the boiler, the piping and the baseboard and changes only the fuel. The technician checks the boiler's age and condition, its sections and its chamber, and tells you whether that option is worth considering next to a full replacement. On a boiler that is near the end of its life, a new high-efficiency gas boiler is the better spend.
Venting, Piping and the Chimney
Gas equipment vents differently from oil. A conventional gas boiler or furnace can use the existing chimney, often with a new liner sized for gas. A high-efficiency condensing unit vents through plastic pipe out a side wall instead, which frees the chimney entirely. The estimate says which applies to your house and why.
Gas piping runs from the meter to the appliance in black iron or approved flexible line, sized for the unit's input. The oil line and the oil filter come out with the tank.
Removing the Oil Tank
An inside tank is pumped out, cut up and carried out. An outside above-ground tank is pumped out and hauled away. A buried tank is either dug out or abandoned in place, pumped, cleaned and filled, depending on access and what the town requires. All of it is part of the conversion job, and the oil tank removal page goes into each case and the signs a buried tank may have leaked.
Oil to Gas Conversion Cost on Long Island
The price depends on the boiler or furnace chosen, the length of the gas piping run, the venting the unit needs, any chimney liner, and the oil tank. That is why the number comes from an on-site visit rather than a phone quote. The estimate is free, written, and carries no obligation.
Wisetack financing can spread the cost of the equipment and the tank work, and the financing page explains how it works, and every other Domino price is on the pricing page.
Gas Service From the Same Company After the Conversion
The same NORA-certified technicians who install the gas boiler or furnace service it afterward. Domino repairs gas boilers and furnaces of every major make, 24 hours a day, with the parts that fail most often on the truck. The gas boiler and furnace repair page covers that. A yearly clean and tune on the new unit is quoted when you book.
Request a Free Oil to Gas Conversion Estimate
Request a free estimate online or call (631) 867-2231. A technician comes out, looks at the house and the system, and puts the price in writing. If the utility has not been contacted yet, the technician will tell you what to ask for.
