Everything Included in the $219 Oil Burner Tune-Up
You get a burner that starts cleanly, burns less oil and passes a safety test, for one flat price. Here is everything the technician does at a Domino tune-up:
- New nozzle, oil filter and pump strainer. These three wear parts are swapped at every visit, whether or not they look worn.
- Vacuum of the smoke pipe and the heating unit itself, so a season of soot is not left insulating the heat exchanger.
- Flue passages cleaned, which is where most of the soot that cuts efficiency collects.
- Burner and controls adjusted for a steady flame.
- Motors oiled where the design calls for it.
- Wiring inspected and the electronic controls checked.
- A test for safe operation before the technician leaves.
An extra vacuum of the chimney base and flue is available as a $95 add-on. The technician will tell you whether yours needs it rather than selling it to everyone.
An Annual Oil Burner Tune-Up Pays for Itself
Soot is an insulator. A layer of it on the heat exchanger means the burner runs longer to deliver the same heat, and every extra minute of run time is oil you paid for and did not get warmth from. A worn nozzle sprays a poor pattern, which makes more soot, which makes the problem worse through the winter.
The tune-up resets all of that in one visit. It is also when the small problems get caught: a cracked electrode porcelain, a weak ignition transformer, an oil filter that is starting to clog. Those are the parts behind most midwinter no-heat calls, and finding them in September costs far less than finding them at 2 a.m. in January with a $189 service call plus parts.
Most of the emergency oil burner calls we take each winter are on burners that skipped their tune-up. That is the plainest case for booking one.
When to Book Your Oil Burner Tune-Up
Late summer or early fall is the right time. The schedule is open, the technician can take the time the job deserves, and the burner is ready before the first cold night. Once October arrives, every oil-heated house on Long Island calls at once and the wait grows.
If you missed the fall window, book it anyway. A tune-up in December still replaces the wear parts and clears the soot, and it still prevents the lockouts that come with a neglected burner. The only bad time for a tune-up is never.
Oil Burner Tune-Up Cost on Long Island
The price is $219, and it is the same for a first-time caller as it is for a customer of twenty years. There is nothing to sign and no plan that renews on its own.
- Annual oil burner tune-up: $219.
- Extra vacuum of the chimney base and flue: $95, optional.
- Repairs found during the tune-up: quoted before the part is installed, and your call to make.
- Gas furnace clean and tune: price quoted when you book.
Compare that with a service call at $189 plus parts for a burner that fails in the middle of the heating season. One tune-up a year is the cheapest heating bill you will pay all winter. Every price on the site is on the pricing page.
The Oil Burner Tune-Up Visit, Step by Step
The technician shuts the burner down, pulls the burner assembly forward and replaces the nozzle, oil filter and pump strainer. The heating unit, smoke pipe and flue passages are vacuumed out, and the combustion chamber is checked for cracks while it is open.
Then the burner goes back together and gets fired. The flame is adjusted, the controls are checked, and the wiring and electronic controls are inspected while the system runs. The visit ends with a safety test, and the technician tells you anything worth knowing about the condition of the burner, the boiler or furnace it sits on, and the oil tank.
Every Domino technician is NORA-certified and does this work every day of the heating season. The trucks carry the parts that fail most often, so a problem found during the tune-up is usually fixed on the spot once you approve the price.
Signs Your Oil Burner Is Overdue for a Tune-Up
If any of these sound familiar, book sooner rather than later:
- Soot on the boiler, the furnace or the floor around it, or black marks near the chimney cleanout.
- A burning or oily smell during the first minute of each cycle.
- The burner short cycles, firing for a minute and shutting down over and over.
- Oil deliveries are coming closer together than they did two winters ago.
- The reset button has been pressed more than once this season.
- A rumble or delayed ignition when the burner starts.
A tune-up addresses all of these. If the burner has already locked out and will not restart, skip the tune-up and call for emergency heating repair; the technician can do the cleaning once the heat is back on.
Tune-Ups for Oil and Gas Heating Systems
The $219 tune-up covers oil burners on boilers and warm-air furnaces of every make, including Beckett, Riello and Carlin burners and the boilers they sit on, from Burnham, Weil-McLain and Peerless to Buderus and System 2000. The same technicians also do a clean and tune on gas furnaces, with the price quoted before the work starts.
Boiler owners who want more than the burner looked at should read about annual boiler service, which adds the water side of the system. Furnace owners can see what a furnace maintenance visit covers.
Oil Burner Tune-Ups With No Service Contract
Many Long Island oil companies will only tune up a burner for customers on a yearly plan. Domino does not work that way. COD oil customers who buy from any supplier are welcome, and so are homeowners who have never called us before. You book one visit, pay for that visit, and nothing renews.
If you also want oil delivered, our sister company Domino Fuel handles heating oil delivery on the same no-contract terms.
