Oil Burner Repair: What to Check Before Calling a Technician

The thermostat, the emergency switch, the reset button and the tank gauge. Four checks, two minutes, and a fair share of no-heat calls end right there.

Quick Answer

Before calling for oil burner repair, check that the thermostat is set to heat and above room temperature, that the emergency switch at the top of the basement stairs is on, that the breaker has not tripped, and that the tank has oil. Press the reset button once only. If the burner still will not run, call Domino Oil Burner Service at (631) 867-2231, 24 hours a day.

Fast Oil Burner Repair on Long Island

Oil burners are used to heat up your home. They will provide you warm air along with hot water whenever you need during the cold weather. They are also quite reliable. But many times they just stop working and we have no clue what to do. What do you do in that situation? Call a technician, right? Not so fast, Here are a few important things you need to check before calling a technician.

  1. Check for damaged filters

This is one of the most common reason for a lot of burner repair issues. And most people ignore the filters of their device which makes them a lot more vulnerable to issues and damages. A filter in oil burner is something that cleans the air that enters and leaves the furnace. If a furnace is dirty or clogged, it results in inefficient airflow and increases the pressure in the furnace. Most of the time, this results in a built up of heat in the furnace.

So, how do you know if there is any issue with your filters? For starters, figure out if there is dirt accumulated in the filter. Second, check if the filter is damaged in any way. You can do this by listening to it after turning on the furnace and listen for any whistling sound. If there is, there is probably an issue with your filter and you'll need to call a technician.

One thing I always advice is to change your filter every month or every other month and don't use cheap filters. This will help you avoid any issues in the first place.

  1. Check the thermostat

This one is probably obvious to most people. Yet, you'd be surprised how many people make the mistake of having the wrong thermostat settings. This is one of the most common problems so it should be one of the first things to check. Make sure that the thermostat of the furnace is set to "heat". A lot of times, this setting is accidentally moved or changed and you don't even realize it.

Also, set a temperature that will turn the furnace on. If it does not turn up in a few minutes, turn it up to ninety degrees. This will help you ensure that it does not become unreliable when troubleshooting. A lot of times, even replacing the thermostat can solve your furnace issues. Check if the thermostat needs to be replaced.

  1. Power issues

This is related to the first step, check for the thermostat's fan switch. There are usually two modes of the thermostat's fan switch. The "on" mode and the "auto" mode. It is normally in an auto mode which means it turns on immediately after the furnace is turned on. You can turn it into "on" mode to troubleshoot problems. If it does turn on, you can conclude that there are no issues in this part of the device.

  1. Check the fuel levels

Finally, the oil burner will probably not work if it does not have sufficient fuel to operate. An oil burner needs enough fuel for the combustion process. Check the fuel level and make sure it has enough fuel for it to run smoothly.

The Four Checks, in Order

  1. Thermostat: set to heat, set above the room temperature, fresh batteries if it uses them.
  2. Emergency switch: the red-plate switch at the top of the basement stairs or beside the burner is easy to knock off. Make sure it is on.
  3. Reset button: the red button on the burner control. Press it once and hold for a second. If the burner lights and then locks out again, stop and call.
  4. Oil level: read the gauge and tap it. If the tank is empty, order a delivery first, then call for a prime and start.

What Not to Do

Do not keep resetting, do not open the burner or the combustion chamber, and do not run the burner if you smell oil or see smoke. Shut it off at the emergency switch and call. Domino Oil Burner Service answers 24 hours a day and travels throughout Suffolk, Nassau and Queens.

FAQ

Before-You-Call Questions

1How many times can I press the reset button?

Once. Each reset pumps oil into the chamber, and repeated resets can flood it and turn a small repair into a dangerous one.

2The tank gauge says a quarter full but the burner will not run. Why?

Gauges stick, and sludge at the bottom of a tank can block the line before the gauge reads empty. Tap the gauge and call if in doubt.

3What does the service call cost if it turns out to be simple?

$189 plus any parts, quoted before the work. If it was the switch or the thermostat, the technician will show you so it does not happen again.
